Savic Motorcycles to scale up production as EV demand surges amid fuel crisis

Australian auto manufacturing is back – on two wheels instead of four, and all electric. Savic As oil prices soar from the US and Israel’s war with Iran, Melbourne-based Motorcycles is positioning itself as an answer to hip-pocket pain at the bowser. 

The company makes about five electric motorcycles a week at its factory in West Melbourne, making it the first commercial vehicle maker to be based in the Victorian capital since the closure of Ford, Holden and Toyota’s factories in 2016-17.

It is moving further east to Blackburn soon as it scales up its manufacturing to meet surging demand and turn its 16.2kWh battery into a home energy storage system. Chief executive Marc Alexander, who worked on the Apple Newton handheld computer in the 1990s, says electric motorcycle adoption is lagging about four years behind EV cars, which have found new-found enthusiasm with Australian buyers, with the company also eyeing the Chinese and European markets.
