In two weeks, Denis Savic will fly to China to open a factory that will help
him build motorcycles in Melbourne. The 1200-square-metre facility in Zhejiang province, just south of Shanghai, will consolidate powertrain components and ship complete EV “crate engines” back to Savic’s West Melbourne workshop.
Savic’s bet is different. By accepting what Australia can’t do – high-volume,
mass-market manufacturing – he’s proving what it can do: high-value,
design-led, software-enabled products that happen to be assembled here.
“If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere,” Denis says of
Australian manufacturing – and he doesn’t mean it as a compliment.
In January 2025, Savic Motorcycles produced five bikes. By January 2026, the
target is 40 bikes per month. One hundred customers have signed
contracts, with another hundred expressions of interest in the queue.
A new model
It’s won the 2022 Victorian Premier’s Design Award and two Australian
Good Design Awards. At 280kg, it delivers 60kW of power through a liquid-
cooled motor with over 200km of range.
“If we can crack that code and that model for selling direct to consumer and
scale it, that’s a huge advantage in the market,” Denis says.
